Can I become a midwife? ?

Ok about me. I’m a married mum of one who goes to school in September. I’m 24. I am currently a self employed ‘ofsted’ registered childminder and before that I was a senior sales consultant. I did not go to collage but got c – a* in all my gcse’s. To be honest it only now I have an idea of what I want to do. I have a great income with what I’m doing and we need my wage for mortgage and bills. Can I study midwifery on open uni? Do I do an access cause if so what? And how long would it take? Or is uni an option? Thankyou anyone who can help :-)

You would need to do an Access course because midwifery is all degree based now. Some colleges offer specific health profession related Access courses but as long as you do a science based Access, that’s acceptable.

Open University currently do not offer midwifery so you would have to go to regular uni. It’s a 3 year course, unfortunately there aren’t any uni’s offering the part-time 4 year option at the moment.

If you do decide to train, you would receive a monthly bursary but it is means tested so it depends on what your husband earns. To be honest, my married friends who are student nurses/midwives do find it financially harder than those of us who are single. But it is do-able. Many of us earn extra money by working as bank hca’s for the trusts that we train with. That way shifts can be fitted in around uni, placements & family life, extra money is coming in & it’s useful experience. It might not always be maternity but care is care, whatever department you’re in.

You might find some useful advice here http://www.studentmidwife.net/ from others who’ve been in a similar position as yourself
