Mortgage Consultant Degree

Am I working class or middle class?

My parents are both nurse consultants and make between £90-100 thousand between themselves (not separate) a year. They both have postgraduate degrees. We are a family of 5 and we live in a 5 bedroom house that cost £300,000 and our mortgage is £2500 per month. My siblings and I went to public school. We struggle and there are a lot of arguments about money but bills are always paid. I didn’t get pocket money. I am only entitled to £10 EMA and I only used my mums P60 (I think it is called).
My sister studied Sociology and she said that we’re working-class and most people are, there is just a stigma on working class so people tend to think they are chavs, poor, on benefits and ASBO type families. And she said you know you’re middle class when you can to send your children to private school but don’t necessarily do it. Are we a working class family?
We vote Labour if that makes any difference.

What a load of rubbish. A household income of £90-100,000 puts you in the top 10% of households; presuamably by public you mean state school which 94% of the population go to and is neither here nor there in determining you class; your parents are professionals. All of these factors clearly point to a middle (even upper middle) class family. You sister is talking rubbish.

I grew up in a working class family in the sense that the household income was fairly low (equivalent to about £20,000) but, we owned our own home and my father had a semi-professional job – though he lost it in the 1980s. I would have said I grew up working class (more or less).

I have a degree and work as a teacher (in a very posh school), have a household income of around £60,000 and consider myself middle class (though common).

Working class means, to me, living on a relatively low income, working in low, semi-skilled jobs with limited education, probably not owning a home.

There is no stigma on being working class, who said so? The working classes don’t much care for chavs or people who are willing to live on benefits and not looking for work.

Your sister seems to be a stereotypical middle class sociology student understanding that there are poor people in the country. I bet she’s gone all left wing too. Gordon Bennett!!

The above mentioned are the basic requirements in order to qualify for a home loan. Secondly, I was interested to know how big a home loan I could get considering Mortgage Consultant Degree. As soon as I knew how much, I could start searching for a house.
